Human Resource DepartmentWhat would you say is the most important department in your organization? Could it be the technology guys? After all, the techies are the ones who make the most money. Or, could it be the guys who take care of the administration? They are important too. Or how about the sales and marketing guys? After all, they are the ones who bring in the money without which you wouldn’t get paid! You might have thought of any or all of these answers, but how would you react if I were to tell you that it is the Human resource department that is the most valuable! Speaking of the human resource department, there was once a famous advertising executive who said, “Each evening, my entire inventory goes down the elevator to return to work the next day!” As all advertising professionals are wont to do, he might just have exaggerated, but then he wasn’t very far from the truth as well. Even Jack Welsh, who is more famous for firing thousands of workers has admitted in his books that people were his most important asset. It is in order to manage people that most companies have a human resource department. But as is the case with such departments, it has, over a period of time, devolved into a department that merely takes care of hiring and firing without focusing on everything in between. Indeed, if one were to look at the operations of a typical human resource department, one would find that there is a method to the madness. The work of the human resource department actually starts when there is a requirement for a professional. Once a pool of possible or likely candidates have been identified, they will then go through the interview process. Once they have cleared this process, the people in the human resource department will have to scope out the financial details. The jobs is not done once the resource joins the organization. After this, she or he has to be nurtured in order to perform to the best of his or her abilities. There will be problems with adjustment, interaction and communication issues, which need to be resolved from time to time and finally, the human resource department also has to handle all wage and appraisal related issues.
